REC 221 Trail Design and Relationships

This course is an overview of sustainable design and relationships required to successfully construct and maintain authorized singletrack trails. Students will incorporate the customs, traditions, wisdom and environmental practices of the local Indigenous people in the trail design process. Students will learn about the recreation opportunity spectrum (ROS) and the design of trail networks for all. Students will be introduced to concepts of trail management and development such as authorized trail process, risk management plans, volunteer strategies, materials lists, budgets and signage plans. One of the main focuses of the course is about managing relationships required to gain approval and acceptance of trails. This includes building and fostering relationships with Indigenous groups, local trail associations and all levels of government. Students will put their learning into practice by planning, designing and building a section of trail.
