Capilano University is partnering with STEPS Forward to co-create inclusive post-secondary education initiatives supporting students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their academic and student lives.

What is STEPS Forward?
Formed in 2001, STEPS Forward is a family-driven organization whose mission is to ensure people with developmental disabilities are included as students in the academic and social life in colleges and universities across British Columbia.
What is inclusive post-secondary education?
Students admitted through STEPS Forward study in their program of choice, taking part in the same classes, tutorials and labs as all CapU students, but they register as participating auditors.
A student studying through this partnership participates in all lectures; however, the AU (audit) category allows assignments and exams to be modified to suit their individual learning style.
On campus, students are supported by a STEPS Forward inclusion facilitator, who helps them navigate coursework and program requirements and collaborates with instructors on academic modifications.
After completing their program, students receive a Certificate of Completion at CapU Convocation alongside students earning their diploma or degree in the same field.
Students enjoy student life in the same clubs, events and social spaces as other CapU students. They also receive a CapCard, which allows them to access library services, study spaces and student services.
Students will receive membership in the Capilano Student's Union (CSU), which allows access to programs such as the U-Pass and student health and dental coverage.
With the support of a STEPS Forward inclusion facilitator, students are supported in individualized ways to make decisions about what they want to explore on campus.
Over the summer months (April - August), STEPS Forward helps students find paid work, internships, training, networking, and/or other volunteer opportunities that relate to their career goals.
Who is eligible?
There are no minimum academic requirements to be accepted. STEPS Forward looks at each potential student's desire to learn at CapU and have a fully inclusive student experience.
The initiative is committed to supporting the inclusion of students with significant and/or complex support needs.
