If you are currently enrolled in courses at CapU this term and your sources of funding that would have otherwise covered your expenses for the term are unavailable, reduced or have stopped, you may be eligible for an emergency bursary.

Emergency bursaries are:

  • non-repayable;
  • provided to address short-term, unplanned and unexpected financial hardship;
  • not designed to meet educational costs common to all students, such as tuition fees;
  • approved on a case by case basis;
  • dependent upon the availability of funds.

Before you apply

Before applying for an emergency bursary, please consider whether you have applied for, received, and exhausted other sources of funding, such as:

  • student loans and/or grants;
  • CapU and external scholarship, bursary, and award funds;
  • earnings from work;
  • financial support from family/friends;
  • savings and RESP;
  • line of credit from the bank;
  • Employment Insurance (EI)

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  1. Domestic or international Capilano University student;
  2. Current full-time or part-time enrolment in any credit program at Capilano University;
  3. Demonstration of a sudden and unexpected financial emergency;
  4. Demonstration of financial need (as assessed by Financial Aid and Awards);
  5. Based on available funds.

How to apply

Domestic and International Students

  1. Download, save and complete the fillable application, Emergency Bursary Application 2024-2025 (pdf). 
  2. Answer all questions carefully. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  3. Read, sign and date the 'Applicant Declaration.'
  4. Attach supporting documentation related to your sudden and unexpected financial emergency (e.g. receipts, proof of loss of employment, two recent paystubs, etc.).
  5. Using your CapU student email account, email your completed application and electronic copies of your supporting documentation to finaid@capilanou.ca.

Indigenous Students

Contact Indigenous Student Services at indigenous@capilanou.ca for more information and instructions on how to apply.

Review your application and supporting documents before submitting.

  • If you did not answer all of the questions, fully complete the “Statement of Circumstance” and did not include any applicable supporting documentation, your application will be considered incomplete.
  • Ensure that you are emailing us from you CapU student email account and that all attachments are included in your email.

Carefully review and complete your Budget Worksheet.

  • Calculate your financial expenses and resources for the full 4 months of the term (September to December).
  • If you have claimed exceptional expenses, you must outline what they are in your “Statement of Circumstance” and provide supporting documentation in order for these expenses to be considered.

What happens next

All applications will be processed in the order that they are received and may take up to 5-10 business days to be reviewed.

Once your application has been reviewed, an email will be sent to your CapU student email account regarding the status of your application.
