Over the past decade, CapU has grown into a remarkable space to thrive for students and employees alike.

From new campuses to bold programs that strengthen community connections, it’s been a period of imagination, action and purposeful change.
As President Paul Dangerfield prepares to step down, we pause to reflect on how far we’ve come since he began his tenure in 2016.
Under his leadership, we’ve made significant strides and we are excited for the bright future ahead.
“After almost a decade at the helm – through the stormy seas of a global pandemic and a rapidly shifting political landscape – I can say with confidence that our reputational excellence has been built one collaborative relationship at a time.”
Campus growth: expanding our presence
Over the past decade, CapU has expanded its footprint and deepened its roots.
The opening of CapU Lonsdale in 2019 brought new energy to The Shipyards in North Vancouver, creating a welcoming space for connection and learning. In 2024, the launch of our Squamish campus marked an exciting new chapter – extending educational opportunities along the Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
Back in North Vancouver, the upcoming Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies and, later this year, our first on-campus student housing marks a bold leap forward – expanding access to affordable accommodation for students, enhancing the student experience and shaping a more connected campus community.
Together, these milestones represent more than physical growth – they reflect CapU’s commitment to building vibrant spaces where innovation, belonging and possibility thrive.

Inspiring imagination and connection
CapU has also significantly strengthened its educational identity in the last ten years – one rooted in curiosity, creativity and connection.
Building on the foundational work of Envisioning 2030 and shaped by the direction of Illuminating 2030, the University has focused on innovation, sustainability and inclusion, embracing a bold, learner-focused future and driving the next phase of our evolution.
We’ve expanded our bachelor’s degree programs and introduced interdisciplinary opportunities that invite students to think across boundaries and explore new perspectives.
Grounded in innovation, sustainability and inclusion, this strategic vision continues to guide how we teach, learn and grow – creating space for every learner to thrive and make meaningful impact.

Paddling together: Advancing reconciliation and respect
CapU continues to grow in its commitment to reconciliation, guided by meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and a deep respect for Indigenous ways of knowing.
In 2018, the creation of Skw’cháys – a 30-foot canoe carved for CapU’s 50th Anniversary – became a lasting symbol of our connection and commitment as a Canoe Family. Soon, Skw’cháys will have a permanent home that will honour Indigenous traditions and provide a space to share them with students, employees, visitors and communities.
From language revitalization to the living framework of Chén̓chenstway, these efforts reflect a growing and ongoing journey rooted in reciprocity and shared responsibility for shaping a more inclusive future.

Focusing on imagination
As we continue to grow and evolve, imagination remains at the heart of everything we do – fueling bold ideas, meaningful connections and a shared commitment to shaping what’s next.
With bold progress made towards Envisioning 2030, CapU is well-positioned to continue advancing its vision, with the leadership team united by purpose and alongside a vibrant community of learners, educators and partners.
As President Paul Dangerfield concludes his term, we recognize his thoughtful leadership and the lasting impact of his time at CapU. Together, we’ll continue to explore new possibilities and create a future rooted in meaning, creativity and connection.
In his final President’s Letter, Paul Dangerfield reflects on the university’s growth, the accomplishments of the past year and the exciting direction ahead.
