The global economy is in crisis. The once triumphant but often criticized project of globalization is under extreme stress. Threats include the emergence of new geopolitical rivalries, the surge of authoritarian nationalisms, the fragmentation of global trade, the devastating effects of global financial crises, and the intensification of global inequalities. This course examines the basic architecture of the global economic system as well as the ways in which political power structures and interacts with the system. It also examines how the global economic system and who wields power within it is in a state of flux. Students are not expected to have a background in economics.
