SOC 365 Death and Dying in Society

Death is a universal experience, but the ways we die, and what happens afterwards, is profoundly shaped by one’s society. This course explores death and dying as a social process, focusing on institutions such as hospitals, hospices, and funerals. It will explore topics like Medical Assistance in Dying, mourning, and the toxic drug crisis, and reflect on the place of death in our own lives. We will consider the diverse ways people understand mortality, including how we are socialized into death as we are into life.
