This course assists advanced level English as an Additional language (EAL) students in developing integral language and academic literacy skills for success in early university years. Students will develop essential critical thinking skills for effective academic reading, enabling them to comprehend and analyze complex texts, evaluate arguments, and synthesize information for deeper engagement with the material. Throughout, students will clearly and concisely express text comprehension and analysis in both written and oral assignments. This course will honour Indigenous ways of Learning and Knowing.
Prerequisites
One of the following: International English Language Testing System (IELTS)=6.5 overall, and no one score less than 6.0; or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet=83; or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL)=70; or Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)=56; or EAP 100 (B+) and EAP 100 (B+)
Course Notes
EAS 100 is an approved Self and Society course for Cap Core requirements.
Intended for English as an Additional Language (EAL) students who have met the English Language Requirement (ELR) for admission to their academic program and who wish to improve reading comprehension of complex texts and develop critical thinking skills through written and oral assignments. The course is not intended for students who use English as their first language.
