The course will give students an overview of the key issues in Canadian income tax law. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the Income Tax Act by examining its history and structure, including statutory interpretation. The course will examine tax avoidance, personal and business income and loss, capital gains, and other income and deductions. Students will gain an understanding of rules for computing taxable income and tax payable, including tax treatment of damage awards.

Prerequisites

LAW 101, LAW 110 and LAW 210; OR LAW 101 and 45 credits of 100-level or higher coursework
