History Department
Are you intrigued by the rise and fall of empires? Do you have a thirst for knowledge about the events that have shaped our world? Learning about history offers us insight into times past and how they shaped our future.
Studying history helps us make sense of today’s world. Through learning about our past, we gain a better understanding of our present, and realize possibilities for tomorrow. These critical thinking skills are essential in a rapidly changing society.
The study of history involves imagination, flexibility, a sense of realism, curiosity about people and their experience, and an intense love of a good story.
History helps us understand how and why change happens. Armed with this understanding of the past, we become curious, informed, active citizens of the world.
Why study history at CapU?
We offer a range of lower- and upper-level courses related to a variety of locations, time periods and topics. Our department is passionate about teaching and learning, with small class sizes and a welcoming atmosphere.
You’ll learn how to think critically, read carefully, analyze and argue judiciously, and write and speak effectively. These skills and sensibilities are useful for nearly all aspects of modern life – and are highly valued in many occupations.
Career paths for students of history
History students go on to careers in a wide spectrum of fields. This includes everything from education and business to law, politics, the military and public service. Others pursue journalism, advocacy and activism, administration and management, or library and museum work.

Each of our courses is completed in one semester, allowing students to sample many different areas. Prerequisites are not necessary for lower-level (100- and 200-level) history courses. Most of our courses are transferrable to other BC universities and colleges. Please consult the BC Transfer Guide for details.
