Capilano University’s new location, CapU Lonsdale, on the second floor of The Shipyards development in North Vancouver will allow students to experience education in an accessible, central and scenic setting.
At this location, CapU continues a 50-plus-year tradition of delivering personalized learning in small classes taught by accomplished educators.
Several academic courses are offered at CapU Lonsdale, where students can take advantage of the location to collaborate with community partners.
The site is also the permanent home for Continuing Studies, offering courses to adults seeking training for professional and personal growth.
A community of learning on the waterfront
CapU Lonsdale is situated in a partial reconstruction of the historic Shipyards' "machine shop." The site, previously known as Lot 5, has more than 84,000 square feet of mixed-use commercial and community amenity space and connects with the popular North Shore Spirit Trail.
Centrally located near the pier, this site includes restaurants, cafés and retail, along with an outdoor public ice rink and water park. The development offers paid parking spots, along with bicycle stalls.
With seven classrooms as well as flexible spaces, the unique interior design of CapU Lonsdale celebrates the natural West Coast environment and local waterways.
Recognizing that the main campus is a built environment encircled by forests, the architects sought to recreate the outdoors inside the Shipyards' urban environment. The design includes an overhead forest canopy with seagull-shaped lights and flooring evocative of moss and rocks.
To celebrate the traditional and unceded territories on which CapU Lonsdale is situated, the building features four doors carved by artists from local Nations. Along the floor's west side is a 60-foot-long balcony featuring views of Vancouver’s downtown.
