Capilano Universe: The Unseen World of Acoustical Engineering ;

This talk introduces the fascinating yet often unseen world of acoustical engineering and its various practical applications. Beginning with a general overview of acoustic principles, we will then explore how engineers and scientists harness these concepts to design various aspects of infrastructure and built environments around us.

From the hum of transportation and industrial noise outdoors to the quiet indoor environment in hospitals, classrooms and libraries, acoustics professionals play a key role in designing environments that balance comfort, functionality and well-being.

While thoughtful acoustical design tends to fade into the background and goes unnoticed, poor acoustics are immediately felt and negatively impact the quality of life of people and wildlife. Through real-world examples, this talk invites attendees to consider how good acoustical design can enhance communication effectiveness (think about the time when you’re conversing with a friend in a crowded café), elevate music performance and minimize environmental noise and vibration impacts, along with many other applications.

About the speaker

Banda Logawa (M.A.Sc., P.Eng) is an engineering instructor at Capilano University and a practicing Acoustics Engineer. He brings a deep passion for engineering design, particularly in the areas of mechanical design, acoustics and vibration.

As a professional engineer, Logawa has led numerous acoustics projects across Canada, ranging from healthcare and education to residential and transportation. Beyond his project work, he is an active educator and speaker, delivering seminars and acoustics training to various government and municipal organizations.

As both an educator and professional practitioner, he strives to bridge academia and industry, inspiring future engineers to tackle real-world challenges.
