CapU alumni and staff are invited to read, reflect and reconnect through dialogue as the Truth and Reconciliation (T+R) Learning Circle returns this October.
This annual alumni book club is presented in partnership with Indigenous Education & Affairs, creating a space for respectful conversation and a deeper understanding of Indigenous histories, perspectives and the ongoing work of reconciliation.
This fall, the group will read Wînipêk by Niigaan Sinclair, a powerful collection of essays exploring Indigenous identity, treaty relationships and the enduring legacy of colonization in Canada.
Participants will engage with themes of truth, reconciliation and accountability over three online sessions. Two co-facilitators, one from within the Philanthropy & Alumni Relations team and an external facilitator, will lead discussions.
Conversations focus on reflection, learning and community dialogue.

These 90-minute sessions will take place online via Zoom. Participants are asked to read the assigned chapters before each session, attend all three sessions and contribute to a safe and open learning environment.
The T+R Learning Circle is part of Capilano University’s broader commitment to decolonization and Truth and Reconciliation efforts.
This includes initiatives to indigenize curriculum, pedagogy and campus life, co-develop respectful relationships with First Nations communities and support opportunities for continuous, meaningful dialogue.
About the book: Wînipêk by Niigaan Sinclair
This year’s selection, Wînipêk by Niigaan Sinclair, winner of the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction, offers a powerful lens into the heart of reconciliation through stories rooted in Winnipeg, a city Sinclair calls “ground zero” for Canada’s future.
Sinclair is Anishinaabe and a professor at the University of Manitoba. He holds degrees from the University of Winnipeg (BA, Education), the University of Oklahoma (MA, Native- and African-American Literatures) and the University of British Columbia (PhD, First Nations and American Literatures).
With bold insight and deep care, he explores the complexities of Indigenous life, history and resistance while illuminating both colonialism’s injustices and the resilience of communities reclaiming their place and power. Wînipêk challenges readers to reflect, unlearn and imagine a more inclusive path forward.
Copies of Wînipêk are available at the CapU Library, local booksellers and Massy Books, an Indigenous-owned bookstore in Vancouver. Participants are responsible for obtaining their own copy before the first session.
After the final session, participants are invited to continue the conversation in the CapU Alumni LinkedIn group, a space for ongoing learning, resource sharing and community connection.
