For Ava Stark, landing the role of Elsa at Shanghai Disney was nothing short of a dream come true.
“Oh, my goodness, I freaked out when I found out,” she laughs. “I couldn’t believe it. Elsa is the queen, and to be chosen to play her is the ultimate honour. I kept saying, ‘Are you serious?!’ – it was totally surreal.”
A dream realized
Ava’s love for Elsa began long before she ever stepped into the iconic ice queen’s shoes. “When Frozen came out, I was in grade six, and I immediately became obsessed with Elsa,” she says. “I even did a whole public speaking competition about it and started by singing ‘Let It Go.’”
When the opportunity to audition for the role came up, Ava seized it without hesitation. “It felt like a full-circle moment. When I finally got the call, it was like everything I had worked for came together in that instant.”
Becoming Elsa at Shanghai Disney
The experience of performing in Shanghai, especially as part of the Frozen production, was more incredible than Ava had ever imagined.
“The level of professionalism was off the charts,” she recalls. “The training was intense. We weren’t just stepping into the role; we were becoming Elsa. Every movement, every gesture, even the way she carries herself – everything had to be exact.”
Performing four times a day, five days a week, Ava says, was still magical each time. “I’ve never performed on a stage so grand, with a set so incredible. It was a constant reminder of the magic Disney brings to life.”
What Elsa means to Ava
For Ava, playing Elsa was not just about stepping into the character’s shoes—it was about embodying what Elsa represents to millions around the world.
“Every time I would step on stage and hear the audience gasp, or hear kids shout, ‘Mommy, it’s ELSAAAAA!’ – it was humbling,” she says.
“Elsa is so much more than just a character, and I was doing everything I could to make the experience magical and authentic for the audience.”
Living in Shanghai
Life in Shanghai was just as magical as the performances. “It’s like living in the future,” Ava says. “The city is clean, safe, and full of energy. The people are incredibly kind and respectful.”
Beyond her Disney role, Ava enjoyed exploring the city and making lasting memories. “I spent a lot of time at Disneyland and rode the Zootopia ride over and over again!”
One of the biggest highlights was meeting Broadway legend Sierra Boggess, who played Ariel in the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid. “She’s one of my biggest inspirations, and I got to hang out with her thanks to Disney bringing her in. She gave me advice, and we’re now connected. That’s something I’ll never forget.”
The audition journey
Ava’s audition for Elsa began in Vancouver, where Disney’s casting team was holding an open call. “It was fast and intense. I performed ‘My Man’ from Funny Girl, and they immediately called me back. They gave me 45 minutes to prepare ‘Let It Go’ and ‘I See the Light.’”
Ava vividly remembers the callback. “It was me and two other girls. We had to perform the songs multiple times, doing them in different ways. Afterward, they asked me to sing ‘Let It Go’ one more time with them – just for fun!”
After months of anticipation, Ava finally received the life-changing call: she was chosen for the role.
CapU’s role in Ava’s journey
Reflecting on her time at Capilano University’s Musical Theatre Diploma program, Ava credits her instructors for their unwavering support.
The encouragement from her teachers was pivotal in inspiring her to audition for Disney in the first place.
“Ava shines as a fearless and hardworking artist, bringing positivity and dedication that lift up everyone around her,” theatre instructor Cathy Wilmot says.
“With her drive, talent and generosity of spirit, I have no doubt she will make her dreams a reality and thrive in whatever she sets her heart on.”
“Ava’s sunny disposition and great work ethic created a professional and enjoyable experience for everyone who worked with her. It’s no wonder she got such an exciting opportunity straight after graduation. She has a real talent for both performing and for making everyone in her presence feel her joy and her passion.”
Looking ahead
With the experience at Shanghai Disney under her belt, Ava has a clearer perspective on the performing arts. “I’ve seen the challenges, sacrifices, and rewards that come with this career,” she says. “It’s hard work, but it’s worth it. More opportunities come, and you keep learning.”
Her advice for CapU students dreaming big? “Connections are key – so make them. Be kind to everyone you work with, from the directors to the crew. Don’t let fear stop you from trying. You may be exactly what they need, even if you don’t think so. And always be yourself.”
Ava is eager to explore new horizons. “I’m excited to dive into the Canadian theatre and film scene and to focus on writing my own music.”
With her talent and determination, Ava is sure to continue lighting up stages and inspiring others to chase their dreams – wherever they may lead.
