Late grads should proceed to the Birch Building cafeteria upon arrival. A member of the Convocation team will sign you in, assist you with collecting your regalia, and ensure you are seated in the CSW.
Please note that grads who arrive after the academic procession has begun are not guaranteed the opportunity to cross the stage with their program and may instead cross with the final program of the ceremony.
There is no dress code for convocation however we do recommend dressing for the weather. Grads will be processing down the stairs of the CSW so please hold the handrails if you have heeled shoes.

Yes — there is a difference between graduation and convocation:
Graduation
- Graduation is the official process of completing your program and receiving your credential (degree, diploma, or certificate).
- You must apply for graduation to have your credential awarded.
- Details on how to apply are available on the Graduation page.
Convocation
- Convocation is the ceremonial event where graduates celebrate their achievement.
- It takes place once a year in June.
- Eligible grads must register to attend the ceremony.
- Registration details are sent to your Cap email address.
- Registration is open April 16 – May 15
Our ushers will store all flowers and balloons in a holding area beside the doors which your guests can collect following the ceremony.
If you have guests attending from outside Canada and need assistance providing documentation for a visa, you can write them a letter of invitation to include with their application. You must write this letter yourself, as CapU cannot issue it on your behalf. Please refer to the Sample Invitation Letter (pdf) for guidance.
