This page contains support and guidance for survivors and those affected by sexual violence.
Capilano University promotes a culture of consent and respect that does not tolerate or condone sexual violence, which may include but is not limited to sexual assault, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, stalking, indecent exposure, stealthing, non-consensual activities of a sexual nature and gender-based violence.
We strive to maintain a safe environment through proactive measures to prevent and respond to sexual violence, as per our B.401 Sexual Violence Policy.
Supports for survivors of sexual violence
Any member of the University community who has experienced sexual violence can access confidential support through the Office of Student Affairs (for students) or People, Culture & Diversity (for employees), regardless of the time or place at which the sexual violence occurred.
Visit our resources page for a list of who to contact at CapU or in the community if you have experienced an incident of sexual violence and need support.
Our assistance includes:
- Information and advice
- Clarity around restorative justice or informal resolutions, as well as formal reporting options and investigations
- Safety planning and support with accessing medical, emergency and community services
- Help with requesting academic and other accommodations
- Emergency referrals for housing, financial aid or food supports
- Referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources
Our support services are inclusive of all gender identities and sexualities, including but not limited to queer, trans, non-binary and 2-Spirit people.
We recognize that anyone can experience sexual violence and that anyone can cause harm. We also provide support for people who have caused harm and are looking for a way forward.
You do not need to make a formal report to receive support, resources and accommodations; you only need to disclose the incident by telling someone that it happened. Our key definitions outline the difference between a disclosure and a report.
Survivors can choose to initiate an informal resolution process if they believe the issue could be addressed through a conversation with the person who caused the harm or through alternative interventions. For information about your options, visit our Sexual Violence Resources page, and learn more about making disclosures and reports.
If you choose to make a formal report, this will initiate an investigation. A Student Support Advisor or the Student Rights and Responsibilities Advisor will ensure you understand what reporting and investigating look like and determine if the reported incident violates CapU’s Sexual Violence Policy.
Students, staff and faculty supporting student survivors of sexual violence can consult with the staff at Student Affairs for guidance about how to connect survivors to Student Affairs, and information about how to respond to a student's disclosure.
Student Affairs is available by appointment during regular office hours, Monday to Friday from 9am to 4 pm. They don’t offer crisis response services. If you’re in an emergency situation, please call 9-1-1 or campus security.

Our ethics and approach
We recognize that anyone can experience sexual violence and that anyone can cause harm. Social factors such as race, gender, sexuality, ability, age, socio-economic status, spirituality, immigration status and ethnicity play a part in who is targeted for violence.
We understand that sexual violence can have many impacts on individuals and communities and that some groups of people experience sexual violence at higher rates.
Our support services are inclusive of all gender identities and sexualities, including but not limited to queer, trans, non-binary and 2-Spirit people.
Capilano University commits to providing sexual violence prevention and response that is:
- Intersectional
- Accessible
- Culturally grounded
