Our main campus’ backyard is a giant playground. From peaks to ocean views, here are 7 low-cost ways to experience what makes the North Shore the North Shore.
Studying at CapU’s North Vancouver campus means you’re in one of the region’s most nature-connected, community-rich places.
While tuition and textbooks add up, your surroundings are free. Everything on this list can be accessed with your U-Pass, an unlimited, universal transit pass included in your CapU fees.
1. Climb the Grouse Grind
Nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster,” the Grouse Grind is a steep 2.5-km climb and a North Shore rite of passage. You’ll gain over 800 metres of elevation – and bragging rights. The view from the top is unbeatable. Returning down on the gondola costs $20; however, you can descend the free (but challenging) BCMC trail.

3. Chill by the water at Cates Park (Whey-ah-Wichen)
Enveloped by Burrard Inlet, this tranquil spot has forest trails, beach access and lots of space to read, study or nap in the sun. Its ancestral name is Whey-ah-Wichen, a Tsleil-Waututh word that means “faces the wind.” Keep an eye out for herons, kayakers and pop-up community events.
