Fostering Sexual Agency and Consent Culture within the CapU Community: A Briefing for Faculty and Staff
Join special guest Jason Laker, as he explores transformative actions needed to address the causes and effects of sexual harassment, coercion and violence in post-secondary.
Together, we will workshop strategies to employ at CapU to advance the programs, policies, and practices in service of ending gender-based violence and fostering a culture of sexual agency and community care.

About the speaker
Jason Laker is a Professor of Higher Education, Student Affairs and Community Development and Chair of the Department of Counsellor Education (and former Vice President for Student Affairs) at San José State University. He previously served as AVP & Dean of Student Affairs at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he was also a faculty member in Gender and Women’s Studies and a Fellow within the Centre for the Study of Democracy in the School of Policy Studies.
Laker holds a Ph.D. from the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and his career in higher education spans over 30 years. Laker has taught and presented extensively on topics such as gender, men’s and masculinities development and studies, sexual violence prevention and response, student affairs and development, social justice, equity, intercultural dialogue and community development, leadership, among other issues.
His research (with Co-P.I. Erica Boas, PhD) focuses on postsecondary students’ beliefs, experiences and practices regarding sexual consent communication and negotiation to reform sexuality education, practices, policies and elimination of gender-based sexual violence within and beyond higher education
