Program Highlights
The Music Diploma (Classical) Program provides a rich introduction to music in an environment that nurtures the artistic and creative potential of our music students.
The program integrates theoretical, historical and performance studies, offering concentrations in piano, voice, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and composition.
This two-year Diploma is transferable to a Bachelor of Music Degree and provides the foundation for further studies in other artist diplomas, including Music Education, Music Therapy and the Liberal Arts.
- Contextualize a broad range of musical forms and identify the influences of historical, cultural, technological, sociological, and economic events and factors.
- Work conceptually with musical elements such as rhythm, melody, harmony, form, style and expression from a variety of musics, through listening, creating, and performing.
- Perform on or with one’s primary instrument/voice with technical proficiency and incorporate diverse musical techniques and traditions, including those from Indigenous and non-Western cultures.
- Create music scores and recordings using music notation software and digital audio workstations respectively.
- Engage with the local community to explore employment opportunities, needs and solutions to community challenges and issues through creative musical activity.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour centered in equity, diversity, inclusivity, accessibility, reconciliation and decolonization in all areas of music practice, creation, performance, and education.
Admission Requirements
English language requirements
English is the language of instruction at CapU. All applicants are required to demonstrate competence in the English language prior to admission.
If English is not your first language or you’ve received your education in a language other than English, you must meet our English Language Requirements.

Additional information
Auditions include performance, personal introduction, and music theory assessment.
Admission Notes
Applicants can satisfy the music theory assessment criteria by successfully completing the Royal Conservatory of Music Level 8 Theory (Advanced Rudiments/Grade Two Rudiments), by achieving a minimum grade of 70% on the CapU Music Theory Placement Exam, or by achieving a minimum grade of C+ in MUS 109. Please note that MUS 109 credits cannot be counted towards completion of the Music Diploma and must be taken in addition to the required courses.
