In a professional studio setting, students learn hands-on the techniques and procedures utilized in an industry costume department. The course is focusing on taking measurements, interpreting measurements to draft a pattern, and analyzing the correlation between standard body measurements and individual body measurements to draw conclusions that enable the students to draft and alter a pattern to fit an individual.

COST 202 - Elements of Costume Design

COST 205 - Advanced Film Costumer Project

This course will broaden the areas of expertise with hands-on production skills learned during practical work on a film project. Building on the skills and techniques practiced in COST 105 and COST 202, students will be evaluated for successful project work in the planning, preparation, and execution of duties in both the preparation process and the on-set supervision of a student film. In addition, students are introduced to the safety protocols of stunts and special effects used in the industry and how they relate to modification or preparation of costumes to be used by the performers. Hands on professional development techniques and systems are introduced.

This course is intended for students possessing some knowledge of costuming skills. The subject is taught in industry standard costuming workshops where students are mentored by professionals experienced in each area. Specialty skills studied may include, but are not limited to, any of: millinery, mask making, armour fabrication, shoe making , accessories building. Upon completion the successful student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the specific area of costume specialty studied. This course is only offered in the spring term.
COST 276 - Costume Skills Intensive: Advanced Construction

This course is intended for students possessing some knowledge of costuming skills. The subject is taught in industry standard costuming workshops where students are mentored by professionals experienced in each area. Advanced construction skills studied in this course will be selected from, but not limited to, the following: advanced flat patterning, garment fitting and alterations, period tailoring, advanced construction techniques, and garment draping. Upon completion the successful student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the specific area of advanced costume construction skills studied. This course is only offered in the spring term.
COST 277 - Costume Skills Intensive: Special Effects

The subject is taught in industry standard costuming workshops where students are mentored by professionals experienced in each area. Special effects skills studied will be selected from, but not limited to the following: special effects costuming, costumes for animation, surface design, advanced garment and fabric dying, advanced aging and distressing, and machine embroidery. Upon completion the successful student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the specific area of costume special effects skills studied. This course is only offered in the spring term.
