Escalated strike action impacting transit services in Metro Vancouver

Advisory for students

Release date:

Tag(s): News & Announcements

Coast Mountain Bus Company (CMBC) is currently in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement with CUPE Local 4500, the union that represents approximately 180 transit supervisors.

The union has announced they will begin strike action at 3 a.m. on Monday, January 22 for at least 48 hours. Given the potential for developments over the weekend, we will not know whether job action is happening until 3 a.m. on Monday. If they go ahead with this plan, this will result in a full shutdown of bus and SeaBus services. SkyTrain, West Coast Express, West Vancouver Blue Bus (including bus #255) and HandyDART service will not be affected.

CapU classes and activities at all campuses and learning locations will continue as scheduled with normal operating hours. We encourage students to look at alternative ways to travel to campus including driving, carpooling, car sharing, cycling or walking.

If needed, contact your instructor to check if there is flexibility for in-person classes at CapU Lonsdale and the North Vancouver main campus.

We encourage everyone to stay up-to-date on the situation and develop alternative plans to commute to campus. There are several ways to stay up to date on the status of transit service in the event of further escalation:

Sincerely,
