Dear Students,

As you are aware, groups of Capilano University employees have been engaged in strike action with picket signs near the main campus since their union, MoveUP Local 378, initiated job action on May 15. As of June 6, the Capilano University Faculty Association (CFA) has joined the strike in solidarity. As a result, student classes, activities and events on campus are suspended until further notice.

Convocation will still go ahead as planned, and we look forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with grads and their friends and family.

What this means for students

  • We anticipate that instructors will honour MoveUP picket lines
  • Classes are temporarily suspended
  • In-person classes will not be changed to online classes because course instructors are not working due to the strike action.
  • Course instructors will not be available to meet with students during this time.

CapU remains committed to our students, and to the negotiating process with our employees. We want to resume normal operations on our campuses again soon. At this time, we don’t know how long the strike action will be, but we are hopeful that a negotiated settlement with MoveUP Local 378 can be reached soon. Please watch your CapU email, social media and www.capilanou.ca for further updates and information.

We will be sending a separate email to international students very soon outlining specific issues and concerns that you might have.

If the strike goes on for an extended period, the University will continue to communicate with you. We will keep you informed of any alternative plans for completing your summer courses.

Additional support

We are aware this news could impact the course of your studies and may be stressful. Here are some resources that might be helpful:

  • Here2Talk, a free and confidential counselling service for post-secondary students, available 24/7 to all domestic and international students
  • Empower Me, Mental Health Resources
  • Well Being, information and resources to support you

It is our hope that we can reach a resolution to the strike quickly to continue serving our students and employees at CapU without an extended disruption.

Sincerely,

Kyle Vuorinen,
Registrar
