North Vancouver B.C. May 8, 2023 – Capilano University (CapU) is pleased to announce Yuri Fulmer, OBC, will serve a second term as chancellor of the University.
Fulmer, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and chairperson of Fulmer & Company, was appointed chancellor of Capilano University in 2020. As chancellor, Fulmer also serves as a member of Capilano University’s Board of Governors and the Senate. A key ambassador for the University, the chancellor’s role is a voluntary one that includes conferring credentials at convocations and performing other official ceremonial duties. Fulmer also brings his extensive financial acumen and entrepreneurialism to the role.
“Yuri has been an absolute champion and supporter of our long-term plan, Envisioning 2030,” says Paul Dangerfield, president and vice-chancellor of Capilano University. “He carries forward the vision, purpose and values of the University into the community, and brings the community into the University. I’m delighted to have him continuing on as chancellor as we continue cultivating life-enhancing experiences for students.”
An entrepreneur from age 19, Fulmer built up a $60 million business portfolio before he turned 30. Along the way, his company was listed twice on the Profit 100 as one of Canada’s the largest and fastest growing private companies. Fulmer lives on the North Shore and is active in the community. He serves as the only Canadian on the Board of United Way Worldwide, is co-chair of the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society and a director of the Vancouver Opera Foundation. He has served as a director on a host of corporate and not-for-profit boards including the Vancouver Opera, the Surrey Food Bank and BlueShore Financial. In his work to support Truth and Reconciliation, has also been the title sponsor of the largest dedicated art prize in Canada for First Nations art for multiple years.
“I’m thrilled to be asked back for a second term as chancellor at Capilano University,” says Fulmer. “CapU is my local institution, but more importantly, it’s an institution focused on delivering the very best education that it can. It’s a university of innovation inspired by imagination with health and well-being at its core, and I’m proud to be chancellor.”
Fulmer has been a supporter of Capilano University, donating both time and money. In 2021, Fulmer and his family made a lead donation of $2 million to kickstart the capital campaign for the University’s new Centre for Childhood Studies. Thanks to his donation, the campaign went on to raise $5.6 million for the centre that will add 74 childcare spaces and increase enrolment in early childhood education programs by 25 per cent.
Fulmer has been widely recognized for his contributions to others. His awards include Canada’s Top Forty Under 40 (2008), BC Community Achievement Award (2010), Spirit of Vancouver Award (2011), Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), Joseph and Rosalie Segal Community Vision Award (2014), Business in Vancouver’s Living Legend (2021 & 2022), and Order of British Columbia (2010) – our province’s highest honour – for his “dynamic entrepreneurship and committed volunteerism”.
