Maryna Krut
Ukrainian bandura virtuoso.
Ukrainian star Maryna Krut is both an ethereally voiced singer and a virtuoso of the bandura, an iconic traditional Ukrainian folk instrument. Her breathtaking performances weave a musical tapestry infused with resilience and cultural richness.
Born in western Ukraine, Krut started playing the bandura (a 65-string cross between harp and guitar), at age eight. Her practice was first grounded in traditional music, but Krut says she began to rebel by age 15, exploring “a more modern and jazzy way to play the instrument while mixing in soul-pop vocals.”
Widely praised for her captivating performances evoking raw emotions, Krut is at the forefront of a revival of Ukrainian culture which is deployed as a tool of resistance in the confrontation with Russia. She also performs for Ukrainian military in combat zones, understanding the importance of helping those who are risking their lives for the sake of their country's independence and freedom.
