Philosophy is the practice of asking life’s great questions. At its core is human curiosity about the nature of reality and the way we should live our lives. As Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

About philosophy

Philosophy is a quest for wisdom. Through philosophy we seek deeper meaning and an understanding of the world around us. It’s about discovery and questioning the ultimate nature of things.

As a CapU philosophy student you'll learn to ask big questions and evaluate various positions, arguments and ideas. You’ll develop keen analytical skills and a critical mind. These problem-solving skills are excellent preparation for any career.

Why study philosophy at Capilano University?

Our instructors are committed to a participatory style of teaching. This means students are given the tools and opportunity to engage with challenging and controversial philosophical issues. You’ll be encouraged to develop and express your own philosophical views.

Career paths and further education

Philosophy helps you choose a career, get a job and be prepared for the unexpected.  How?  Philosophy doesn't teach one specific skill – it teaches you how to learn, think critically and create thoughtful answers, which will help you flourish in any career.

Studying philosophy will prepare you for careers that require problem solving and careful writing.  Students often find work in the public sector or business fields, or continue on to further education in philosophy, law or business.
