"Teaching, like life, is relational. The connection between the teacher and the subject, and teacher and student, is the crucial element."
Siri Olesen (MA, Simon Fraser University, 2019) works as a vocalist, pianist, organist, music director, administrator, and educator. She has been a soloist with Early Music Vancouver, The Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and Chor Leoni Men’s Choir.
Her choral credits include The Vancouver Chamber Choir, Elektra Women’s Choir, Phoenix Chamber Choir, and musica intima, where she now serves as Artistic Manager. Olesen has a Mater of Arts in Arts Education from Simon Fraser University, a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from Augustana University, and a Jazz Studies Diploma from Capilano University.
She currently works at Redeemer Lutheran Church as Music Director, and as both a vocal instructor and PMI Facilitator at Capilano University.
My approach to teaching has been influenced by my study of the philosophy of dialogue, my involvement in collaborative music making, and my interest and love of people and their stories.
I am interested in the philosophy of dialogue, especially the relational approach to dialogue found in the writings of German philosopher Martin Buber. I continue to explore how this relational dialogue is reflected in musical and educational contexts.
