Capilano University announces Pouyan Mahboubi as Associate Vice President Academic & Vice-Provost

North Vancouver B.C. June 14, 2022 – Capilano University (CapU) is pleased to announce Pouyan Mahboubi, PhD, has been appointed to the new role of Associate Vice President Academic & Vice-Provost. Mahboubi has served as the University’s dean, Faculty of Arts and Science, since 2018. His time at CapU followed progressive leadership roles over 20 years, including dean of instruction, at Coast Mountain College (CMC) in northern British Columbia.
“With over two decades of experiences in the public post-secondary sector, Pouyan brings creativity, an innovative mindset and strong competencies in collaboration, furthering Indigenization and strengthening inclusive approaches that contribute to a meaningful teaching and learning culture, distinct experiences for students, and community-connected approaches,” said Laureen Styles, VP Academic & Provost.
In this role, Mahboubi will serve as a principal contributor and academic leader, responsible for implementing strategic and operational academic initiatives and priorities; leading academic sustainability initiatives and select external collaborations aligned with the academic plan; and supporting the administration of academic affairs within the Office of the Provost.
As dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Mahboubi co-created with faculty a new academic model, supporting significant new program development that has opened up new opportunities for research, engaged learning, and benefits for communities. He has led, or contributed extensively to, a number of CapU partnerships – including those with the North Vancouver School District (SD44) and the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society – that contribute to enhancing program quality and advancing the academic strategic direction of the university.
“Well informed about trends and future directions in higher education, Pouyan is motivated by CapU’s Envisioning 2030 and Illuminating 2030 goal of reimagining university teaching and learning, and community collaborations. His vision is to see university as an authentically welcoming place to all people,” said Styles.
Mahboubi holds a Master of Sciences (MSc) in Environmental Biology from the University of Guelph, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Science from the University of Northern British Columbia.
