NORTH VANCOUVER B.C. – Disruption to the way things have always been done can reap great rewards. Instead of students overlooking or searching for learning support services, they are congregating in Capilano University’s new Learning Commons. The official opening of this innovative hub where students can access key academic resources and supports happens on November 20, 2018.

Construction dominated a swathe of the ground floor of CapU’s Library Building this summer. Now the newly reconfigured space swarms with students and buzzes with energy.

“From the morning it opened, the Learning Commons was full to capacity. We now have as many as 100 students in this space at any time and we’ve seen a weekly average of 1,300 students in the Learning Commons since its opening,” says Cyndi Banks, Capilano University’s associate vice president of student success.

The Learning Commons is a central facility that provides the space, technology and services to support learning. Instead of students having to track down the University’s math, writing or English language support centres or peer helpers, those services are now accessible at a central gathering space where learners congregate to work in groups or on their own. Students at the Student Life Hub advise others on how they can increase their involvement in the campus community to make the most of their university experience.

The Learning Commons is part of the University’s new Centre for Student Success in the Library Building, which also includes Learning & Skill Support, the Career Development Centre, the Centre for International Experience, the Kéxwusm-áyakn Student Centre and First Nations Student Services.
