Born in Germany, trained in New York City and now based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Juno-winning jazz pianist and composer Florian Hoefner draws from myriad influences that cumulate in his unique brand of modern jazz. Praised by the New York Times as a “composer-bandleader of insightful resolve” and a “harmonically daring pianist reaching toward new sonic territory,” by Downbeat, Hoefner has made his mark as an inventive creator and performer.
Hoefner’s trio features Andrew Downing on bass and Nick Fraser on drums. Their 2023 Juno-winning album Desert Bloom. includes original compositions that showcase Hoefner’s hallmark lyricism. Their previous album, the Juno-nominated First Spring focuses on Hoefner’s arrangements of folk tunes from around the world.
