Following recommendations from Senate, Capilano University's Board of Governors has approved three-year intake suspensions for the Bachelor of Communication Studies and Music Diploma programs, beginning in Fall 2027. The board also approved continued intake to both the Tourism Management Diploma (Co-op) and the Bachelor of Tourism Management programs for 2027–28.

The decisions follow an extensive review of academic offerings undertaken as part of the university's deficit mitigation and long-term sustainability planning. The review considered a range of factors, including student demand and enrolment trends, labour market relevance, academic quality, program sustainability and alignment with institutional priorities.

"These decisions were not made lightly," said Vicki St. Pierre, provost and vice-president, academic. "They reflect careful analysis and consultation through our academic governance processes, with a continued focus on supporting students and maintaining the quality of the educational experience at CapU."

Over the past year, the affected programs have been the subject of detailed review and discussion through the university's established governance processes. Additional analysis was undertaken following earlier decisions to maintain intake for 2026–27, ensuring recommendations reflected the most current information available.

An intake suspension is not the same as a program discontinuance. During the three-year suspension period, the university will have an opportunity to assess future demand, explore potential program renewal opportunities and consider whether revised program models may better serve students and communities in a changing post-secondary environment.

Current students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication Studies and Music Diploma programs will be able to complete their credentials. Faculties, academic advisors and the registrar's office will work together to ensure students have access to the courses, advising and support they need to successfully complete their studies.

The university recognizes the many employees, students and alumni who have contributed to the development and success of these programs over the years. Their contributions were an important consideration throughout the review process.

As CapU continues to navigate significant changes across the post-secondary sector, the university remains focused on strengthening its academic offerings while ensuring long-term sustainability. The approved intake suspensions are intended to support responsible academic planning and create opportunities to evaluate how programs can best meet the evolving needs of current and future students.
