Capilano University joins Canadians across the country in mourning the tragic loss of four Canadian Armed Forces members following a training incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, on October 17. Dozens of others were injured.

In recognition of the national period of mourning, flags at Capilano University campuses have been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect.

This tragedy has a personal connection for me. I lived in Wainwright for 12 years, and both of my daughters were born there. My thoughts are with the community and everyone affected by this devastating event.

Among those who lost their lives were two British Columbians: Private Aidan Goulding of North Vancouver and Private Hayden Lykkemark of Langley. Their deaths bring this tragedy especially close to home for our university community.

On behalf of the university community, I extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who died. Our thoughts are also with those who were injured and the wider Canadian Armed Forces community.
