Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies earns LEED Gold certification
The Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies at Capilano University (CapU) has achieved LEED Gold certification, recognizing the building's exceptional environmental performance and commitment to sustainable design. The certification marks another milestone for the centre, which opened in April 2025 as a hub for early childhood education, research and innovation.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a globally recognized green building certification system, evaluating projects across key categories including energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, sustainable sites, materials and innovation. The centre achieved Gold certification under the LEED v4 Building Design and Construction rating system from the Canada Green Building Council.
Energy modelling indicates the centre consumes about 40 per cent less total energy than a conventional building of similar size and function.
"This LEED Gold certification is a proud achievement for Capilano University and reflects the aspirations of Envisioning 2030 in action," said President Jason Dewling. "The Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies demonstrates how thoughtful design can support learning, research and community while creating a healthier, more sustainable future."
The centre is home to the School of Education and Childhood Studies and a second child-care facility on the North Vancouver campus. Designed to support early learning and care as well as student success, it provides purpose-built spaces for teaching, applied research, collaboration and experiential education.
Among the features contributing to the building's LEED Gold certification are:
- A high-performance building envelope designed to reduce energy consumption
- Energy-efficient ventilation systems and fresh-air monitoring that support occupant health and well-being
- LED lighting throughout the facility that reduces energy use and maintenance requirements
- Water-efficient plumbing fixtures
- Landscaped outdoor spaces featuring native plants and forest-adjacent learning environments that support biodiversity, local wildlife and connections to nature
- Convenient access to public transit and active transportation options
- Comprehensive recycling and waste diversion systems that support responsible resource management
The LEED Gold certification supports CapU's commitment to the goals of Envisioning 2030, including advancing sustainability, fostering innovation and strengthening the university's impact on the communities it serves. Through sustainable actions today, the university is working to create a better place for future generations. As a purpose-built facility for childhood studies, education, research and child care, the centre demonstrates how thoughtful design can create spaces that benefit both people and the environment.
