Ndidi O
Juno-nominated singer-songwriter performs songs from thrilling new album.
Ndidi O's remarkable seventh studio album, It's About Time, merges riveting alt-country, blues, and Irish traditional elements to explore themes of aging and time. Released earlier this year, it was recorded in Cork, Ireland, with producer Steve Dawson and local musicians, including Mick Flannery’s band. For this show, Ndidi’s group, including guitarist Mike Kenney, bassist Brad Ferguson and a special surprise drummer, will perform new songs along with other favourite originals and compelling covers.
Ndidi Onukwulu, also known as Ndidi O, is a Juno-nominated artist who’s been making music for more than 20 years and has six albums to her credit. Born in British Columbia, she found her voice at open mics in New York, discovered her sound in the heart of Toronto’s blues and folk scene, and fine-tuned her live show around the world.
Through her singing, Ndidi invites us into a musical universe that starts and ends in the soul. Her expressive, dynamic vocal range is delicate and almost ethereal at one moment, such as her interpretation of “Sugarman,” and raw and fearsome at other times, like the powerhouse percussive originals “Call Me Queen” and “No Mercy.”
Ndidi has shared stages and collaborated with Grammy-winning artists Allison Russell, Gregory Porter and Rhiannon Giddens. In addition to her solo career, the singer-guitarist continues working on new music with her trip-hop duo BOGA (alongside Mischa Chillak) and with The Blue and Gold, her collaboration with Trish Klein (Be Good Tanyas). Ndidi now divides her time between Vancouver and Ireland.
This concert is part of North Shore Jazz (June 19-28), presented by BlueShore at CapU in partnership with Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
