Access Work Experience

  • The Access Work Experience Department offers two full time work experience programs (Discover Employability program and Access to Work program) designed to meet the needs of students with barriers to employment.  Both AWE programs are currently tuition free.

    The classroom coursework in each program address employability skills. 

    Basic employability skills include:
    • personal management skills
    • occupational health and safety preparation
    • communication and interpersonal skills
    • awareness of typical employer expectations
    • basic entry level manual skills

    Teaching strategies are varied to accommodate various learning styles and include:

    • class discussion
    • hands-on practical skill assessment and development
    • oral presentation
    • interview techniques
    • roleplay
    • individual worksheets
    • group work
    • case studies
    • field trips

    Work Experience  

    The student works with one faculty supervisor to make plans that will address their unique interests and abilities. Orientation and training takes place in a realistic working environment.  Student will receive support and feedback from coworkers and onsite supervisor.  The faculty supervisor sets up the placement expectations and monitors the student progress regularly to assist in addressing the student's learning needs.
