The exacting field of law offers excellent career opportunities for students graduating as legal administrative assistants.

In today’s law office, the legal administrative assistant performs valuable administrative and clerical support to ensure that law firms function efficiently. Lawyers are constantly looking for legal administrative assistants – both experienced and entry level candidates – whom they can train in specialty areas of law.

The Legal Administrative Assistant program is a full-time eight-month program starting in September and again in January each year. There are two terms of study.  The September intake consists of two 15 week terms, and the January intake consists of a 15 week term and a 12 week term (the 12 week term is a condensed format). The Legal Administrative Assistant program provides training in traditional secretarial skills as well as legal procedural courses; including, civil and family litigation, wills and probate, corporate law, conveyancing and mortgaging, and legal office procedures. The program also includes a two-week work practicum in a law or government office.

Once employed in the legal field, many graduates of the Legal Administrative Assistant Program proceed to the part-time Paralegal Certificate program. The Paralegal Certificate provides opportunities for Legal Administrative Assistant graduates who wish to continue their legal studies and pursue job opportunities at the Paralegal level.

“After completing the Legal Administrative Assistant Program, I was immediately able to obtain a position at a mid-sized law firm in Vancouver. I feel that my certification from Capilano is what opened the door for my interview, which ultimately landed me the position. The program was very well planned and organized. The instructors were always eager to help with students’ goals and concerns. I would definitely recommend the Legal Administrative Assistant Program to others who are interested in becoming a legal administrative assistant.” Graduate 2007
