The Writing Centre, which has been in operation since 1985, is open to all Capilano University students, faculty, and staff. We offer drop-in consultations with instructors from the English, Creative Writing, and EAP Departments. Our objective is to help Capilano students write clearly, logically, and effectively in their fields of study. Students from all subject areas at Capilano are welcome - we offer assistance to students at any level of writing ability from beginning to advanced, and at any stage of their diplomas or degrees.
Resources we offer:
- a drop-in centre where you can work on your writing assignments with faculty available to answer your questions and offer feedback and instruction
- information sheets and exercises on many aspects of writing such as using commas correctly, using MLA or APA styles of documentation, or how to write the philosophy paper
- a computer lab with 20 computers and a printer
- a large collection of dictionaries and books on grammar, composition, language, literature, and research
- a quiet work space with natural light and fresh air
New Writing Centre Services
Creative Writing in Writing Centre: During the hours when the Writing Centre is staffed by Creative Writing faculty, you can bring in a sampling of your poems, stories, or other creative text-based works for feedback. Responses to your work may range from a discussion of the broad strokes, to the very particular, focusing in on your mastery of a particular technique, such as your placement of line breaks, evocation of voice, or use of language.
Cap-Art Distribution: Capilano's Creative Writing Centre now has a small capsule-style vending machine, similar to Disroboto in Montreal and Art-o-Mat in North Carolina, in the Writing Centre. Capilano's vending machine will be stocked with students' and visiting writers' chapbooks - amazing value at a nickel.
