The ECCE Department

  • Established in 1968 at the North Vancouver campus, the ECCE department grew quickly and began offering courses at the Squamish and Sechelt campuses as well. Increased demand for ECCE courses has led to courses being offered full time, part time, daytime, evenings, weekends, online, mixed mode and as summer intensives.

Since 2001, the ECCE program has included international opportunities for students to study and work abroad. Students have completed practicums in Kindergartens in Beijing, China. In addition, students have participated in exchange programs with the University of East London, the Swedish Institute of Education and Abo Akademi University in Finland.

The ECCE department has always maintained an active partnership with the "Children's Centre" providing students and faculty with opportunities to work with children and educators in meaningful ways.

Inspired by the work in the preschools of Reggio Emilio, Italy, in 2006 the ECCE department created a faculty Pedagogista position. Currently the Pedagogista works with educators, students and faculty to cultivate an environment of provocation and inquiry. In 2008, an Atelierista position was also created to work with children, educators and students. Through the work of the Atelierista, we now have a dedicated studio for children, educators and students.

In 2009 the ECCE department offered the first Bachelor of Early Childhood Care and Education degree in Western Canada. The degree has provided further opportunities for growth in community and scholarly work, making the ECCE department a place of innovation and excellence in early childhood studies.
