Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree

Every student must apply to CapU through EducationPlannerBC (EPBC), a website for applying to universities and colleges across British Columbia.

• When you submit your application, you will need to pay an application fee of $50, which gives you the opportunity to apply for 2 programs. 
• You will need to upload a digital (PDF) copy of your transcripts and supporting documents at this time.
• If you are currently in Grade 12, you must request that the Ministry of Education submit your transcript directly to Capilano University.
• Documents must be in the original language of issue and translated into English by a recognized translator, if required.

After submitting your application on EducationPlannerBC you will receive an acknowledgement message from us to your personal email.

• This email will include your Student ID number and your myCapU account and email address.
• Instructions on how to track your application will also be included.
• All future messages from us will be sent to your myCapU email.
• If you're applying to CapU as a new student, you can use your myCapU account to apply for entrance awards.

Applications

Please apply early, as applications may not guarantee an audition. Once you have applied and we have confirmed your eligibility, we will arrange an audition/interview.

Support material

Once you have applied, please submit the following support material to the School of Performing Arts office:

1. All official post-secondary transcripts;
2. Résumé outlining experience in any applied or performing arts discipline inducing any management, production and technical experience;
3. Two (2) reference letters from those familiar with your creative work;
4. Provide an answer for the following: “As you see your future, what are the ways you can imagine working as an artist?” in any form or medium you see fit.

Auditions

Please note that it takes time for us to review applications and transcripts to assess your eligibility for auditions and audition spots can fill up quickly.

To prepare for your interview in advance, familiarize yourself with what will be required. Everyone will be asked for an audition as described below.

First and foremost, there will be no audio/visual aids supplied for this interview and you must bring everything you need for your individual presentation.

The Bachelor of Performing Arts is an interdisciplinary program that focuses heavily on creating new work. Your audition must include an original piece you have created.

We encourage you to explore a variety of disciplines, including those with which you have limited experience. Surprise yourself. Exploring new terrain is encouraged. Doing what is comfortable is not. We look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Your original creation for the audition should:

1. Start by telling us the title of your original piece, and if applicable (i.e., if you are using an excerpt from a theatrical work or a snippet of a song, please inform us of that in your introduction.), credit any other artists whose work is included in your piece;
2. The piece should draw from your primary discipline;
3. The piece should also explore other performance forms;
4. Be no more than four (4) minutes total.

Interview

Following your audition, you will be asked a series of questions and given time to consider them. These questions will focus on your aspirations as an artist and how you see yourself fitting into the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree.

It is very important you audition and interview in person. Candidates who are unable to attend in person will be asked to submit their audition electronically and we will arrange the interview by Skype.

Academic Expectations

This is a final fourth-year level degree program. Writing and researching at a fourth-year level is rigorous, and we recommend preparing yourself in advance to ensure success. 

We have a Learning Centre to help you once you are accepted and on campus, but you may consider reading the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Seventh Edition, 2009. It is a recommended text for one of our courses. 

For students who have previously attended post-secondary, even though you submitted a digital copy of your transcripts on EducationPlannerBC, you must submit official university or college transcripts for transfer credit.

If you are accepted into a program, you will receive a letter of offer in your myCapU email inbox.

• You will need to confirm your acceptance into the program by paying a tuition deposit outlined in your letter of offer.
• This deposit will go towards your first-semester tuition once you are registered for courses at CapU.

After paying your tuition deposit, you will receive a letter of acceptance in your myCapU inbox. This may be used to apply for, or renew, a study permit.

• Depending on your citizenship, you may also need to apply for an entry visa.

Once you've been accepted into a program and have applied for your study permit, you'll need to start planning your courses.
