Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree

Credential
Bachelor

Duration
9 month(s)

The Bachelor of Performing Arts is currently undergoing a program redesign. It is suspended until further notice.

The one-of-a-kind BPA degree-completion program provides the unique opportunity to achieve a bachelor’s degree in one additional year of study. Get the latest information about the upcoming relaunch of the BPA by joining our contact list below.

Expanding upon previous training and/or an existing performance practice, the BPA engages students with the aesthetic, conceptual, formal, cultural and practical aspects of performance creation across multiple mediums.

Combining academic research and hands-on studio experimentation, culminating in the creation and production of a capstone performance project, the curriculum explores how to strengthen and sustain a self-generated practice as both a content-creator and event producer.

Program graduates will have the capability of pursuing graduate studies and contributing to arts and culture at local, national and international levels.

BPA program goals

The one-year Bachelor of Performing Arts degree completion program augments previous training and experience by providing a foundation in the knowledge and skills required to sustain an entrepreneurial performance practice.

Upon completion, graduates will:

  • be able to fully realize a performance piece using a variety of media from concept to creation through to production and performance;
  • be able to identify and access the resources necessary to sustain an entrepreneurial practice;
  • be able to articulate the principles underpinning their artistic and/or producing practice;
  • be able to pursue graduate studies; and
  • be able to assume active responsibility for their development as integral and innovative participants in society.

How to Apply

Are you applying as a domestic or as an international student?

Every student must apply to CapU through EducationPlannerBC (EPBC), a website for applying to universities and colleges across British Columbia.

Visit Apply Now to make sure you're ready to fill in your application.

  • When you submit your application, you will need to pay an application fee of $50, which gives you the opportunity to apply for 2 programs.
  • You will need to upload a digital (PDF) copy of your transcripts and supporting documents at this time.
  • If you are currently in Grade 12, you must request that the Ministry of Education submit your transcript directly to Capilano University.
  • Documents must be in the original language of issue and translated into English by a recognized translator, if required.
Apply on EPBC

After submitting your application on EducationPlannerBC you will receive an acknowledgement message from us to your personal email.

  • This email will include your Student ID number and your myCapU account and email address.
  • Instructions on how to track your application will also be included.
  • All future messages from us will be sent to your myCapU email.
  • If you're applying to CapU as a new student, you can use your myCapU account to apply for entrance awards.

Applications

Please apply early, as applications may not guarantee an audition. Once you have applied and we have confirmed your eligibility, we will arrange an audition/interview.

Support material

Once you have applied, please submit the following support material to the School of Performing Arts office:

  1. All official post-secondary transcripts;
  2. Résumé outlining experience in any applied or performing arts discipline inducing any management, production and technical experience;
  3. Two (2) reference letters from those familiar with your creative work;
  4. Provide an answer for the following: “As you see your future, what are the ways you can imagine working as an artist?” in any form or medium you see fit.

Auditions

Please note that it takes time for us to review applications and transcripts to assess your eligibility for auditions and audition spots can fill up quickly.

To prepare for your interview in advance, familiarize yourself with what will be required. Everyone will be asked for an audition as described below.

First and foremost, there will be no audio/visual aids supplied for this interview and you must bring everything you need for your individual presentation.

The Bachelor of Performing Arts is an interdisciplinary program that focuses heavily on creating new work. Your audition must include an original piece you have created.

We encourage you to explore a variety of disciplines, including those with which you have limited experience. Surprise yourself. Exploring new terrain is encouraged. Doing what is comfortable is not. We look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Your original creation for the audition should:

  1. Start by telling us the title of your original piece, and if applicable (i.e., if you are using an excerpt from a theatrical work or a snippet of a song, please inform us of that in your introduction.), credit any other artists whose work is included in your piece;
  2. The piece should draw from your primary discipline;
  3. The piece should also explore other performance forms;
  4. Be no more than four (4) minutes total.

Interview

Following your audition, you will be asked a series of questions and given time to consider them. These questions will focus on your aspirations as an artist and how you see yourself fitting into the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree.

It is very important you audition and interview in person. Candidates who are unable to attend in person will be asked to submit their audition electronically and we will arrange the interview by Skype.

If you have any questions about the audition and interview, please contact us.

Academic Expectations

This is a final fourth-year level degree program. Writing and researching at a fourth-year level is rigorous, and we recommend preparing yourself in advance to ensure success.

We have a Learning Centre to help you once you are accepted and on campus, but you may consider reading the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Seventh Edition, 2009. It is a recommended text for one of our courses.

For students who have previously attended post-secondary, even though you submitted a digital copy of your transcripts on EducationPlannerBC, you must submit official university or college transcripts for transfer credit.

Please send all official documents to:

Registrar's Office
Birch Building, Room BR230
2055 Purcell Way
North Vancouver, BC
V7J 3H5

Official documents may include:

These documents must be sent directly from that institution to Capilano University. They must include the seal of the institution and the signature of the authorizing school representative.

We will accept photocopies of transcripts if certified by the authorizing university or college officer. Notarized copies are not acceptable.

Students may also submit photocopies of academic documents verified by the issuing authority. These authorities include the Ministry of Education, the high school, university, or college, the apostille* or by the appropriate examination board.

Notarized copies are not acceptable.

*Apostille countries refers to an international form of a notary seal as certified by the Hague convention. These would be official notary documents from countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. and can be accepted in place of original or school-certified documents. The Apostille is prepared by either the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Justice in these countries.

Please note: Documents issued in a language other than English must also include certified English translations. Documents must be in the original language of the issue and translated into English by a recognized translator, if required.

An academic document is original if issued to the student by the institution following that institution’s policies.

Notarized copies are not acceptable.

Once you've been accepted into a program, you'll need to start planning your courses.

  • You will be notified of your acceptance through your CapU email and your myCapU account.
  • View our page for admitted students to learn how to prepare for your first day.
  • If you wish to receive transfer credits, please submit official university/college/International Baccalaureate (IB)/Advanced Placements (AP) transcripts either electronically or by mail:
