2018 Convocation Speech

School of Business

Good morning fellow graduates, faculty, and guests. It is an absolute honor to be speaking here today.

I remember when I was graduating from high school. At that point in my life, I had no idea where I was headed. I wasn't particularly passionate about anything, and I always played it safe. I did what was needed, and never quite challenged myself. After dabbling in every major there possibly was, I found business. The world where competition meets creativity, and where you have to live and think outside the box. I transferred to Capilano University at the start of my third year, not knowing what was to come. On my first day, I quickly realized that many of my classmates had known each other for years. I was completely out of my comfort zone, and felt alone, struggling to catch up to everyone else.

My first semester at Capilano was a new beginning in my journey. I was in a new program, at a new school, and all I knew was that I wanted to somehow make my mark. In my time, here at Capilano, I pushed myself harder than I ever thought was possible. I was challenged in ways that I never had been before. I found my passion for constantly improving myself, exceeding my expectations and always extending my reach. This time last year, I embarked on the opportunity of a lifetime; becoming part of the Capilano University case team. I went on to lead a group of 3 extremely hardworking, passionate women. We were awarded with third place from 103 applicants just one year later, in the AMA collegiate conference in New Orleans.

This is my Capilano Story, but this room is filled with hundreds of other Capilano stories. Each of you have your own unique experience, yet we were all drawn here to the same place. Maybe it was the small class sizes which allowed you to enhance your learning, or maybe it was the professors who were well versed and worked in industry. The experiences that you have had from the first day you walked into this building have shaped you to be the talented, hardworking and admirable person you are today.

Your time here has strengthened you. The certificate you are receiving today is more than a piece of paper, it is a testament to how dedicated you are to bettering yourself. It is proof that you did not give up, and that you mean business.

You didn't give up when you had to adjust to a new culture, you didn't give up when you had to pull multiple all-nighters, and you didn't give up when you had to take stats, finance and accounting all in one semester. And I am so proud of you for that.

Today's ceremony is the final period at the end of your Capilano university chapter. We will always be able to turn back the pages, remembering the amazing memories we made, the achievements we accomplished, and the relationships we built. But our story doesn't end here. The next chapter may feel daunting right now, but take comfort in the fact that you have proven you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way.

I would personally like to thank Capilano University for providing me with so many incredible opportunities, including the chance to stand here now. I would also like to thank Andrea Eby & my case team girls who have challenged me, supported me, and most importantly partied with me in New Orleans after the AMA Conference.

We are the generation of game changers. We are ready to make a difference in our world. Remember to keep taking risks, keep stepping out of your comfort zone, and live in the present moment. We don't know how the next chapter of our lives will unfold, but we do know that it will be filled with stories that are worth re-reading, just like this one.

Class of 2018, be proud of who you are today, and all that you have achieved. It is time to walk out into the world, feeling confident in where you are going.

Congratulations to the class of 2018!
