      Drop-In Sessions

      Drop-In Advising Sessions

      Drop-In Advising sessions are approximately 30 minutes in duration and are offered on a first come first served basis.  Drop-In Advising sessions are offered every day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and are conducted in-person only.

      Drop-Ins are ideal for:

      • Discrete information.
      • To support a previously planned program.
      • Students with an emergency situation in need of a referral. 

       

      Appointments

      Appointments

      Appointments are approximately 30 minutes in duration, are booked in advance and provide an opportunity for in-depth program planning. 

      Students are encouraged to come to these meeting having thought about their interests and with questions developed and written down. 

      Appointments are offered every day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and can be conducted in person at Capilano University or via telephone.  Please note that we do not currently offer appointments via Skype or video conferencing.  

      Appointments are reserved for individuals who have a Capilano student number.  During peak periods such as registration, Advisors can be booked weeks in advance.

      Appointments are ideal for:

      • Students who are just starting out and are trying to identify a program of study.
      • Students who want to check their progress in their program.
      • Students who are exploring post-baccalaureate program options upon completion of their studies at Capilano.
      • Students who are exploring transfer options after a period of study at Capilano.

      Course Planning Workshops

      Thank you to all students and student supporters who attended the fall 2017 Advising Course Planning Workshops!  We look forward to welcoming you on campus in September, and we are here all summer to help you with any questions you may have as you transition into your first year at Capilano University.

      We will be holding our spring 2018 workshops in the fall so please keep checking this page for a series of workshop dates and times.  Once these dates have been finalized, you will be able to call the Registrar's Office at 604-984-4900 to reserve a seat.

      Course planning workshops are group advising sessions for newly admitted students planning to register in a variety of Capilano University programs including Arts, Sciences, Fine and Performing Arts, Health and Education, Business, Tourism, and Communications.  These sessions will provide important information about using the registration system, choosing classes, and accessing services available to students.

      Mission Statement

      We focus on student success, offering advice on Capilano University programs and services through a mentoring relationship between student and advisor. We teach students the skills to make informed decisions related to their educational goals and identify opportunities for personal and academic growth. As members of the Registrar's Office, we support students in their pursuit of excellence as they develop their ability to contribute to the greater community through the application of knowledge.

       Please note: The Advising Centre is closed on all weekends and Statutory Holidays.

      Booking Advising Appointments

      If you would like to book an advising appointment, we have academic advisors available Monday through Friday, with appointments ranging from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Advising appointments last approximately 30 minutes.  To book an appointment, please call our main reception at 604-984-4900.  If you would prefer a telephone appointment to an in-person appointment, please notify our office.  You will be asked to provide a current contact telephone number and the advisor will telephone you at the appointed time and date.  

      Please note: Only current Capilano University students, or students that have applied to Capilano University, can book 30 minute appointments.

      Advisor Responsibilities

      You can expect your advisor to:

      • Be accessible to students in-person, by phone or email, and maintain confidentiality
      • Provide accurate and knowledgeable information on Capilano programs
      • Communicate Capilano policies and procedures and explain university terminology
      • Assist with setting and reinforcing realistic goals
      • Refer students to appropriate services on and off campus
      • Guide students to the tools to be self-reliant
      • Empower students to become self-directed learners and decision-makers

      Student Responsibilities: What You Are Expected To Do

      You have responsibilities in the advising partnership in order to be successful:

      • Prepare for each appointment by researching education and career goals. Bring your questions
      • Be aware of university deadlines (application/document deadlines, drop, withdrawal, graduation application), program requirements and academic policies (including probation or required to withdraw status)
      • Clarify educational values and goals and provide advisor with accurate information regarding your interests and abilities
      • Follow up on referrals provided to you by your academic advisor. Ask more questions if you don’t understand or have concerns
      • Accept responsibility for decisions
