Elected Member - Board of Governors
Layne North is completing his first year in General Sciences as a student at Capilano University. He was re-elected for a term beginning June 30, 2020 and ending June 30, 2021.
His commitment to the Board of Governors is a continuation of his interest in Canadian government, stemming from his time this year as President of the North Shore Constituency Youth Council for the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, and previously, as the President of his high school’s student council.
In recent years, he was selected to attend the Democracy and Youth Program of Encounters Canada, and the Forum for Young Canadians. In 2018 he was one of 150 young people from across the country chosen for their leadership and ideas and given the privilege of representing Canada’s youth at the Canada 150 and Me National Youth Forum in Ottawa.
Academically, he is highly interested in CapU’s psychology program, as well as courses offered in Physics and Chemistry. Currently he is taking a variety of courses, including philosophy, to try to broaden his perspective.
Outside of university, North is an active member of his community and has been volunteering at the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre since 2016. He is an avid player of percussion instruments, particularly the Marimba, and has toured internationally as a member of the World Music Program.
Since 2012, he has performed at the ISME conference in Greece, the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a competition winning performance at Carnegie Hall and most recently at the Musikverein / Golden Hall of Vienna in July 2018 as part of the acclaimed Summa Cum Laude International Youth Festival.
In his remaining spare moments at home he reads constantly, and enjoys playing games of all forms and kinds.
