Join us for the first of three days of exciting workshops for new students on Monday, Aug. 26! Check-in time is 8:30 a.m. in the Cedar Building.

Smart Start Workshops – Day 1 Schedule

8:30-8:55 a.m. – Check-in – Cedar Building

9-9:55 a.m. – Transitions and expectations for university life – CE 148 (Counselling)

Many new students are surprised to find that the expectations at university are quite different from high school. This workshop will help students understand the differences between university and high school, what university professors expect, and the keys to making a successful transition to Capilano University.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the differences in expectations of instructors at the high school and college levels
  • Identify 10 habits for academic success
  • Commit to building at least one new study habit this semester

9-9:55 a.m. – How to use a growth mindset for setting and achieving SMART goals – CE136 (Student Affairs)

In this session, seasoned students will learn how to apply a growth mindset to set and achieve academic and personal goals. We will also cover the resources available to help students succeed in overcoming obstacles and attaining their dreams.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast a fixed vs. growth mindset
  • Explain how to use a growth mindset to overcome obstacles and achieve goals
  • Set at least one SMART goal for the semester ahead

10-10:55 a.m. – Make your minutes count: Plan to survive and thrive – CE136 (Student Affairs)

Do you know how much time you need to spend on each class in order to showcase your best efforts? In this workshop, we will share strategies to manage your time wisely (and keep your sanity) while balancing your work/family/social life as a busy university student.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Create a monthly and weekly schedule that includes important dates and deadlines
  • Ensure they have enough time to demonstrate their best efforts in all areas of their life
  • Understand how to complete a project plan

11-11:55 a.m. – Learning how to learn is as important as learning itself! – CE136 (Student Affairs)

Knowing how you learn is key to understanding the best ways to study and remember information. This interactive workshop will help you to identify your own individual learning style to build successful study habits and connect with potential study partners.

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Describe their preferred learning style
  • Identify study techniques to try based on this style
  • Connect with other participants to create study groups

12:45-1:45 p.m. – Off to a Good Start – CE136 (Recruitment)

Have you registered and paid for your classes? Do you have your books and supplies for day one? Do you know where all of your classes are located? We will review everything you need to know and send you in the right direction for a stress-free first week!

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Prepare for the first week of classes
  • Locate campus buildings and resources
  • Eliminate stress and concern on the first day
