Capilano Universe — Choro! Empowering Older Adults and Family Caregivers;

The pandemic has contributed to the trials, tribulations and struggles so many have faced as of late, including overworked family caregivers, widespread isolation, shocking death tolls, and the horrific treatment faced by so many of our elderly in Canada.

Join Karen Yip as she walks you through a small research project she launched at CapU at the beginning of the pandemic, with little certainty of where it would go, given the uncertain times.

Her aim was to help build intergenerational connectivity, or Choro, during a time when connectivity involved a range of new hurdles.

She will be sharing the uplifting and revelatory discoveries she has made so far through her project, and particularly so with respect to the impact we can make in the lives of older adults through Choro. Even during challenging times, Karen’s project puts into evidence the possibility of turning a vision of empowered, supported, and affordable living in old age into a reality.

Karen Yip is the Founder and CEO of Choro: a digital platform, connecting seniors to helpers nearby for companionship and home help so they can age in place comfortably, affordably and build a support network. Karen also teaches at Capilano University with over 26 years of experience as a faculty member and Online Convenor in the Faculty of Business and Professional Studies. Prior to that, she spent several years as a corporate commercial real estate lawyer and hosted “Legally Hip with Karen Yip” on Global TV in the early 2000’s.

She dedicates herself to finding enriching, fulfilling opportunities for the over 3,000 students she has taught. She also spends much of her spare time caring for elderly parents, inlaws and other relatives.

It has been her goal to explore new ways to connect people from both these age groups at opposite ends of the spectrum in ways that will enrich lives and heal divisions in our community.
