DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed New York jazz pianist Miki Yamanaka brings her elegant harmonic depth and lyrical style to the CapU Centre for the Performing Arts for an electrifying collaborative performance. This dynamic concert features the celebrated artist performing alongside both large and small Capilano University student jazz ensembles, showcasing a vibrant exchange of contemporary and classic jazz traditions. Japanese-born pianist Yamanaka has called New York City home since 2012 and in the past decade has wasted no time establishing herself as one of the leading pianists of her generation. Critics laud her “light, expressive touch and solidly crafted, mainstream approach” (All About Jazz), while audiences delight in not only her playing, but her vibrant personality as well. Yamanaka has gained international recognition from her albums as a leader, with Downbeat Jazz magazine repeatedly awarding them high marks. Her most recent and most intimate release, Stairway to the Stars, features jazz masters Mark Turner and Orlando le Fleming. Additionally, Miki has emerged as a leader of the New York scene via her notable residencies at Smalls and Mezzrow.   As a collaborator, Yamanaka has worked with alto saxophonist Antonio Hart, the Philip Harper Quintet and the Roxy Coss Quintet.  10014191
