    • If there’s a fire on campus, you need to act quickly. Remember, your personal safety comes first. Learn more about the following fire procedures and what your responsibility is in an emergency situation.

      What do I do if there's a fire on campus?

      Students:

      You are responsible for following the correct procedures during a fire. 

      When the drill sounds:

      • Only grab your personal belongings if they are near you.
      • Evacuate your area quickly using the nearest emergency exit.
      • Close all doors and windows as you leave.
      • DO NOT use the elevators.
      • Move completely away from the building. Go to the designated assembly area, as directed by the emergency wardens.
      • Report your attendance to your instructor.
      • Report the location of anyone requiring assistance to the emergency warden.
      • Wait for the official all-clear signal before you re-enter the building.

      If you cannot evacuate, use the designated refuge area located in the stairwells. 

      Faculty:

      As an instructor, ensure you:

      • Keep outer clothing, your mobile phone and your car keys with you whenever you are teaching, especially in winter. You won’t be able to get back to your office in an emergency.
      • Have your class attendance list ready to take with you in case of fire evacuation, either in hard copy or on your mobile device.

      Also, familiarize yourself with the location of:

      • Emergency wardens.
      • Fire alarm pulls.
      • Fire extinguishers.
      • Location and purpose of Evacu-trac.

      When the drill sounds:

      • Only grab your personal belongings if they are near you.
      • Evacuate your area quickly using the nearest emergency exit.
      • Close all doors and windows as you leave.
      • DO NOT use the elevators.
      • Move completely away from the building. Go to the designated assembly area, as directed by the emergency warden, or move at least 100 meters away from the building.
      • Report the location of anyone requiring assistance to the emergency warden.
      • Ensure your students are accounted for and report any missing students to the emergency warden.
      • Wait for the official all-clear signal before you re-enter the building.

      If you cannot evacuate, use the designated refuge area located in the stairwells.

      Employees:

      All employees and staff members should be familiar with the locations of:

      • Emergency wardens.
      • Fire alarm pulls.
      • Fire extinguishers.
      • Location and purpose of Evacu-trac.

      When the drill sounds:

      Only grab your personal belongings if they are near you.

      Evacuate your area quickly using the nearest emergency exit.

      Close all doors and windows as you leave.

      DO NOT use the elevators.

      Move completely away from the building. Go to the designated assembly area as directed by the emergency warden.

      Report the location of anyone requiring assistance to the emergency warden.

      Wait for the official all-clear signal before you re-enter the building.
