  • Art History is the study of the different periods and styles of art from pre-history to the present. Its scope includes the history of architecture, sculpture, painting and the applied arts, with an emphasis on how historical events and the evolution of ideas influenced the art of the time.

    Search the library catalogue for books and audiovisual materials. Enter the Subject Heading ART HISTORY for a list of titles. References that describe a geographic, historical or cultural context are found by searching ART, followed by a descriptive term, such as ART CANADIAN, ART MEDIEVAL or ART ASIAN. Some headings may be further subdivided by century, e.g. ART, MODERN 20TH CENTURY. You can also search for the names of art styles, such as ART NOUVEAU or POSTMODERNISM.     AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS

    The library has an extensive collection of slides depicting well-known examples of art, specifically paintings, sculpture and architecture, located under N5301 S65 in the general collection. There are also videocassette series exploring the history of art such as Art of the Western World;  videos on individual artists, such as Mary Cassatt,  Edgar Degas, Kathe Kollwitz, Andy Warhol, etc., or particular ones dealing with themes in art or styles (e.g. The Hero as Artist, Highland Maya, etc.)
