Exemptions
Exemption Requests are valid for a single term. An Exemption Request form must be filled in for each term as they cannot be carried over.
Can students opt out of the U-Pass?
The U-Pass fee is a mandatory fee that applies to ALL students who pay Capilano Students’ Union fees.
Exemptions will only be given to a student who:
a. upon written request to the University and in accordance with the procedures established by the
University qualifies for an exemption based on the following exemption criteria:
- is enrolled in on-campus courses within Metro Vancouver attending on average one day or less per week; or
- is registered with TransLink as a HandyDart user (copy of valid pass must be supplied); or
- holds a valid Transit Pass1 (copy of valid pass must be supplied); or
- holds a valid U-Pass issued from another post-secondary educational institution (copy of valid pass must be supplied); or
- is enrolled ONLY in Adult Basic Education (ABE) or Adult Special Education (ASE) courses and the cost would prevent the student from participating. Proof must be supplied that the student is in receipt of financial assistance for the term from an external source (i.e. Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program).
AND:
b. has not received a U-Pass valid for the term in which he/she requests and is eligible for an
exemption; or
c. has received a U-Pass valid for the term in which he/she requests or is eligible for an exemption
and has returned that U-Pass to the University within the required deadline.
PLEASE NOTE – Exemption Deadline September 20, 2010: Students who meet any of the exemption requirements listed must fill out an Exemption Request and submit it to the Cashiers' Offices or mail in their exemption form to the following address:
Cashiers' Offices

NOTE: Please do not submit an Exemption Request until you are registered in a course(s).
What if I receive an exemption and then add courses after my exemption form has been processed?
Verification of exemptions will be conducted throughout the term. Students who add courses that make them ineligible for an exemption will be assessed the U-Pass term fee.
What if I register late for courses?
Students who register late for classes will be assessed the mandatory $124 term U-Pass fee.
