About Theatre
Auditions for the Musical Theatre and Acting for Stage and Screen Programs:
Applications are accepted year round for our programs. We hold early auditions in January and regular auditions in April or May for entry into the programs which being in September. Our programs are now full for September 2009. Please send in your application for auditions for 2010.
For January auditions, you must apply to the university by January 8, 2010. For May auditions, you must apply to the university by March 31, 2010. You can apply on-line at our website www.capilanou.ca. On the application form, you may select the programs you wish to apply for. Please download the audition and interview requirement forms below.
The Theatre department offers two separate three-year Performance Diplomas, a two-year Diploma in Technical Theatre and a one-year Advanced Certificate through the Theatre Institute. The Theatre department has a few seats in the history and technical courses for part-time study.

Acting for Stage and Screen Citation
The ASAS Citation is a one-term exploration in the fundamentals of stage and screen acting. Students will study acting, voice and movement, screen acting, technical production, and theatre history. Towards the end of the first term, students will audition for the Certificate program. To qualify for an audition, students must maintain a GPA of 2.67 and have good Professional Behaviour reports. If successful, they will go on for the second term and the Acting for Stage and Screen Certificate. Some students will wish to take their citations and move into a General or an Associate Arts diploma. The Citation must be applied for and will be awarded at the commencement ceremony in June.

The ASAS Certificate is a full year program, where students develop their skills in improvisation, voice, movement, mask, screen process, screen projects, and they participate in a festival of short and one-act plays. This first year is comprehensive and enables students to gain experience in a broad range of theatre and film specialties. At the end of their second term, students will be invited to audition for the Diploma program. To qualify for an audition, students must continue to maintain a GPA of 2.67 and to have good Professional Behaviour reports. The Certificate must be applied for and will be awarded at the commencement ceremonies in June. If successful, they will progress to the Diploma program, and complete two more years of study in Acting for Stage and Screen.

The ASAS Diploma is a professional career preparation program. Over the three years, students will learn techniques in stage acting, screen acting, directing, theatre and film history, scriptwriting, technical theatre, technical film courses, and participate in Master Classes with industry professionals. The first year is comprehensive and enables students to gain experience in a broad range of performance specialties. The second and third years concentrate on performance in both disciplines. Students have the opportunity to direct stage plays in the One-Act Play Festival held each year. Upon graduation, students will have successfully participated in many types of performance as well as stage and screen directing. Through the Master Class series in their third year, students meet various industry professionals who can assist them in their new careers.

The Musical Theatre Diploma is a professional career preparation program. Over the three years, students will study acting, dance, singing, and acting for Film and TV. Students in this program perform twice a term in song and dance revue shows, and have the opportunity to work on the Mainstage and Studio musicals. They have a year of intensive camera acting, as well as acting, dance, musical theatre, musical theatre history, technical theatre, music theory, ensemble, and private voice lessons. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.67, have good Professional Behaviour reports and show improvement in all areas to move on after their first year. Students are given the opportunity to meet industry professionals in the third year Master Classes, as well as in the mock auditions held twice a year throughout their training. Upon graduation, students will have successfully completed advanced dance, acting and singing work, and will have met many professional directors and musical directors who can assist them in their chosen career.

This is currently a two-year career preparation program. Students have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of Technical theatre, and explore the various jobs available to them. In the second year, they are encouraged to take leadership positions on the Theatre department shows. During the Theatre department productions, students get the opportunity to work with professionals in the design, painting and construction areas. This is a very successful program and a very high percentage of graduates find work in the industry soon after graduation. The department is currently developing additional courses and will be working towards a Live Entertainment Technical Production program for the near future.

The Theatre Institute is a one-year certificate program which is unique in the university system. It is designed for applicants who have previous theatre training who desire the opportunity to practice their skills in production or directing; for students with training in related performance arts who want exposure to traditional theatre practice; or for students with experience, but little formal training. The program can accommodate directors as well as production or design specialists.

Facilities
Classes are held in both the Arbutus Studio and the Capilano University Performing Arts Theatre, which houses The Theatre department's season of plays. The theatre is complete with rehearsal hall, technical workshops, state-of-the-art equipment, a fly-tower and a 378-seat house. Theatre students enjoy exceptional access to these facilities and assist in running the theatres in a hands-on, educational experience.

Productions
Students are given the opportunity to work on Theatre department Mainstage and Onstage productions as well as work in various student films through the Professional Film Studies department. Each year the Theatre department mounts full-scale productions in the 378-seat Capilano University Performing Arts Theatre, as well as in its well-equipped and flexible Studio Theatre. Directors include experienced faculty, renowned guest artists and directing students in the program. The Theatre department produces a series of plays in which students work in settings simulating professional conditions. The goal is to foster professional discipline and to provide opportunities for students to practice skills learned in the classroom.
The Theatre department has three play series running per year, the Mainstage Series, the Onstage Series and the student-led One-Act Play Festival. Faculty and professional guest artists are the directors and designers for the Mainstage plays produced by the Theatre department in the Performing Arts Theatre. Shows in this facility are technically challenging and provide valuable experience for student technicians. The Onstage series produces slightly smaller scale shows, experimenting with various audience configurations and with a more Fringe Festival-like atmosphere. The One-Act Play Festival is a student-led project, performed in the Arbutus Studio Theatre in April. The Musical Theatre program presents musical revues every six weeks in the Arbutus Studio Theatre. In addition to the Theatre department productions, technical students have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of events that take place in the Performing Arts Theatre. Students are involved with the set up and operation of professional, touring theatre productions, folk, jazz, and pop concerts, and a host of other events.

Arbutus Studio Theatre
One-act plays, musicals, scenes and revues produced in the Arbutus Studio have different goals. Students are given the opportunity to assume leadership roles, and the production teams and student directors are expected to be self-reliant. The One Act Play Festival, the Musical Theatre practicum, ASAS Scene spectaculars and the Musical Theatre revues are held in the Arbutus Studio Theatre throughout the year.
Students wishing to take part in Theatre department shows must not register for courses which are scheduled after 17:30 on Monday to Friday or perform in any other outside productions. Department rehearsals are scheduled at this time.
