About Study Abroad
Study Abroad, also known as Student Mobility or Education Abroad is an umbrella term that essentially means obtaining a form of international education abroad. It offers Capilano University students an exciting opportunity that will enhance their understanding of global issues while experiencing another countryy and culture. Studying abroad challenges students to learn and conduct research in a cultural context different from their own, encourages students to develop their sense of self in the world, and provides an experience that will aid in development of professional skills.
Reasons to participate in a Study Abroad Experience:
- Challenge yourself with new experiences.
- Explore and engage other cultures.
- Become fluent in another language.
- Provide a competitive advantage for graduate and professional school applications or employment opportunities.
- Prepare for living and working in a globally integrated world.
- Expand your social and professional network to the international level.
There are currently three types of Study Abroad Programs:
1. Exchange Programs
An Exchange Student is one who will attend a host University who has a formal exchange agreement with Capilano University. Students will be formally enrolled as a Capilano Student, paying Capilano tuition fees while taking courses at the host University for transfer credit towards graduation.
2. Study Tours
Study Tours combine lectures and assignments with cultural and sightseeing activities, in order to gain first-hand experience and understanding of the unique culture and context of another country. Participants will be taking one to two classes taught by Capilano University Professors during the Study Tour.
Groups of 13-20 students will depart for a 3-5 week program held during the summer semester. Capilano Study Tours are open to students in all disciplines. Designed to provide students with a comprehensive and rewarding experience, this program is perfect for those with little travel experience and a great stepping stone to International Exchange Programs.
3. Visiting Students
Students who are currently enrolled in a full-time at Capilano University may choose to attend another University for one term or one academic year as a visiting student. The purpose of Visiting Student status is to complete coursework that will be transferred back to Capilano for degree completion. Please note this is not an exchange program as students will be responsible for payment of tuition fees directly to the host University.
The Visiting Student Program is currently available for the Danish Institute for Study Abroad
