About Psychology

"Know Thyself", the aphorism of the ancient Greeks, is still good advice. Psychology courses will introduce you to theories and research findings in psychology that can help you understand yourself and others. You will learn to think critically about social issues and the claims of pop psychology, and to apply what you learn about parenting, interpersonal skills, problem solving, stress management and emotional intelligence to your relationships and your work. Courses in psychology are required for careers in many occupations including teaching, business, service industries and police work, health care and rehabilitation. According to the American Psychological Association, psychology is the most popular undergraduate Arts major, and two-thirds of bachelor degree graduates in psychology find work in a related field, such as caring for children or the elderly, or working with special populations such as people with disabilities, autism or addictions. Link here for information on careers in Psychology.

University Transfer First and Second Year

The Psychology Department at Capilano University offers a full range of required first and second year university transfer courses, which you can take for your Associates of Arts degree with a Concentration in Psychology, or as UT electives,  or for your program requirements or electives. You can take the first two years of your Bachelor of Arts degree at Capilano University, and subsequently transfer to third year university for completion of your degree. Taking your first two years at Capilano University will save you over $2,500 in tuition fees, and the smaller classes and individual attention from faculty will teach you essential writing, studying and critical thinking skills for your academic success in university.

As many of our second year courses are offered only once a year, students who wish to major in psychology should be aware of the various first and second year course requirements of our Associates of Arts degree, and for psychology majors at SFU, UBC, or other transfer institutions, so they can take the courses they need for entry into third year at the universities. Please check the university transfer guide at the BCCAT (B.C. Council on Admissions & Transfer) web site for further transfer information. Or talk to any of our faculty about careers in psychology, our course offerings and/or transferability.
