Read About Us Out in the Field
The weather was perfect for our trip, the sun just breaking through the clouds, with just enough warmth, to take away the frost from our breath.
We were on our way up the Mariot Valley for our winter skills course, where we would be learning about all that it takes, to have a luxurious winter experience, while living and sleeping in the snow.
On our itinerary were winter travel skills, shelter building, igloos, snow caves or “doghouses”, depending on the snow conditions, and how to stay warm and toasty in a winter environment.
Three hours of travel found us at tree line, ready to build our base camp for the next two nights. The first night we slept in tents, and the second night, some of us spent the night in the winter shelters, we had made during the day.
The cooking was gourmet, the night were mixed, with stars on one, and light snow on the other. Friendships grew deeper; as we crept closer to one another during the night, for that little extra body heat, to stay warm, as the hot water bottles begin to cool, and our body temperatures dropped.
Our second day was a base camp, and a day trip up the valley to hone our avalanche skills, and to see some more terrain.
The third day found us heading back out, the way that we had traveled in, much wiser, more seasoned, and feeling that we had accomplished something significant, two nights in the Coast Mountains, with style, and good humor, in a winter wonderland.
